…that empathy is underutilized because people think it’s something it’s not…
One of the most common misconceptions is that people think if you are empathic, you are being nice. Empathy is about understanding, recognizing, and articulately another person’s thoughts, feelings, and beliefs. It’s not about making polite and pleasant statements.
The second area empathy is commonly confused with is sympathy; these 2 areas are not the same. Sympathy statements include an “I” or “my” since they reflect the speaker’s perspective. Empathetic statements will not include these as they should reflect the other person’s perspective. Often they’ll start or include a “you” statement.
Finally, a third misconception with empathy is that you are agreeing and/or approving with someone if you express empathy. This is simply not true as many times you may disagree with that person’s thoughts, feelings, and beliefs wholeheartedly.
Empathy is simply understanding, recognizing, and articulately another person’s thoughts, feelings, and beliefs, aka, their perspective.
I work with a lot of my Coachees on the concept of empathy. For more information about my coaching and other services, visit my website: https://www.badeauconsulting.com/
