Let’s think about it…
When you recognize others for something that’s important to them, such as a birthday, finishing a project, promotion, etc., it shows you care. It’s one of the many ways to build relationships with others. There are two critical elements to this recognition you must nail. First, you must understand what’s important to them – not what you think is important or what’s important to others. Second, you must understand what type of recognition they prefer – not what you or someone else would prefer. Everybody is different – some would cringe if you had them stand up in front of the room at a company meeting for praise, others may like it.
When building relationships, remember, it’s about the other person. What’s important to them? What are their preferences? Who are they?
